U.S. Researchers Develop 500-GHz Silicon Microchip
10:05 am on June 21, 2006 | Category: Cellular, Mobile Devices, Wireless Technology
The world’s fastest ever silicon-based microchip has recently been developed and demonstrated by a team of scientists in the United States.
By freezing the chip in a solution of liquid helium, researchers from IBM and the Georgia Institute of Technology were able to achieve speeds of 500-GHz, 250 times the speed of chips in today’s mobile devices.
If this technology can be effectively utilized in the years to come, it will allow for faster PCs and wireless networks, as well as cheaper and more advanced mobile phones.
“Faster and faster chips open up new applications and reduce costs for existing products,” commented IBM Professor, David Ahlgren, about the recent research.
