Verizon Communications is fulfilling its promise to bring interactive features to its FiOS television service, in the form of location-based traffic reports and weather forecasts.

The so called “FiOS TV Widgets” service is now available at no extra charge to Verizon’s fiber optic television subscribers, providing access to real-time local traffic and weather information.

Customers may use their remote controls to pull up a constantly updated ticker at the bottom of the screen, without interfering with their programming. Weather and traffic reports are targeted based on ZIP code, and include the option to search for information on other ZIP codes as well.

“With our new applications like Widgets, customers can better personalize and control their TV viewing,” said Verizon’s senior vice president of video solutions Marilyn O’Connell. “These services also differentiate FiOS TV in the marketplace by showcasing Verizon innovation and our platform’s unique capabilities.”

This move is reportedly just the first stage of Verizon’s interactive IPTV plans. Later this year, the telecom giant plans to offer a multi-room DVR solution, and also allow customers to view digital photos on a TV screen.

    2. Bring it on! Though I hear FIOS is not [yet] true iPTV, they plan on eventually delivering it like most of what the true iPTV providers are doing. I’m looking forward to all of what iPTV can deliver; traffic reports, weather, and as many have been promising, iPTV FollowMe, iPTV FriendFamilyFinder, iPTV Home Survellance, iPTV P2P, and of course, unlimited and worldwide channels (controlled by content provider and also tapping into any IP that is being broadcast for iPTV. Goodbye monopoly Cable and Satellite, hello iPTV. Bring it on! :)
