Verizon Files VoIP Patent Lawsuit Against Vonage
7:30 am on June 20, 2006 | Category: Business, VoIP, Telecom Services, Law
Two Verizon Communications subsidiaries have just filed a lawsuit against Vonage, the popular American broadband telephone provider.
The filing claims that Vonage America has violated several VoIP related patents owned by Verizon Laboratories Inc. and Verizon Services Corp.
Vonage says that it will vigorously contest the lawsuit, claiming that it uses its own proprietary technology for all VoIP offerings. A team of intellectual property experts has been engaged by the VoIP provider to investigate the matter, and formulate a defence.
News of Verizon’s lawsuit sent Vonage shares tumbling $1.12 in yesterday’s trading to close at $8.48, less than half the value of the company’s $17 IPO last month.
