Mobile phone users in France are finding it increasingly easy to make use of Wi-Fi/cellular convergence technology, and make cheap VoIP calls on their handsets.

Orange, Neuf Cegetel, and Iliad, three top broadband providers in the country, have all begun rolling out special converged services that allow customers to connect to Wi-Fi networks with a dual-mode cell phone.

“I think this market will take off very fast as (wireless VoIP) allows you to save a lot of money on your mobile phone bill,” said Remi Thomas, an analyst with Cheuvreux.

The French market appears set to become a leader in wireless convergence, fueling the dual-mode handset industry, and serving as an example for other countries in Europe.
