Independent telecom provider, Sogetel Communications, has announced plans to create a 4,300 square kilometer WiMAX network in rural Quebec.

The network will be used to deliver wireless broadband internet service, as well as VoIP calling, throughout the sprawling 28-community region. Airspan MicroMAX-SOC base stations and other equipment will deployed by systems integrator, mmwave Technologies, over a five-month period.

The technology being used is specially optimized for use in rural and remote areas where wired broadband solutions are not financially viable. It is designed “to fill in coverage holes in DSL and cable networks, and for Wi-Fi backhaul, enterprise solutions and public safety applications,” according to manufacturer, Airspan.
