Internet giant, Yahoo, is hoping to ramp up its share of the web-based VOD market by revamping its online video offering and offering content through a channel-based system.

This is an obvious effort to de-seat YouTube, a 30-person San Mateo, California company, from its leading position in online Video On Demand.

A total of 12.5 million people accessed the YouTube service in April, compared to a mere 2.6 million visitors to Yahoo’s online video offering. The search pioneer has a long way to go if it hopes to gain a winning position in this highly competitive and fast-growing market, but its well-established brand name and huge cash reserves do give it a fighting chance.
