Apple Computer Inc. has come one step closer to announcing its own iTunes-enabled cell phone product, making a thinly veiled statement of intention in a conference call last week.

“We don’t think that the phones that are available today make the best music players — we think the iPod is,” said Apple CFO, Peter Oppenheimer in last Wednesday’s call. “But over time that is likely to change, and we’re not sitting around doing nothing.”

Last year, Apple worked with Motorola on launching the ROKR, an iTunes handset which failed to live up to the expectations of either company. But many of the ROKR’s flaws and limitations could easily be fixed if Apple launched its own “iPhone” product.

Oppenheimer confirmed in the conference call last Wednesday that the company is in fact investing heavily in the iTunes service. He said that Apple is “very enthusiastic about its products in the pipeline,” but wouldn’t say exactly what these products are.

Piper Jaffray Co. analyst, Gene Munster, described this statement as “the closest we could get to the announcement of a new product from Apple.”
