The world’s largest retail chain, Wal-Mart, has agreed to expand its partnership with Comcast by offering the cable giant’s digital television services in 500 U.S. stores by the end of this month.
Comcast’s products first appeared in Wal-Mart in June. They were sold on a trial basis at 11 stores in Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Washington D.C.
The cable giant’s senior vice president of retail, Bob Faught, expressed satisfaction with the deal, saying that it had the potential to benefit both Comcast and Wal-Mart immensely. “We saw this as an opportunity for us to lead them into the cable industry,†he said.
A number of other American outlets, including Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, RadioShack, and Tweeter Home Entertainment are already selling the cable offerings of Comcast’s rival, Time Warner.
Comcast is now hoping to extend its own retail distribution network, and expects to sell triple play television, internet, and digital voice packages through Wal-Mart, beginning in early 2007.
