Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, the brains behind such popular internet services as Kazaa and Skype, are reportedly planning a new venture that would involve the distribution of TV and video over the web.
According to BusinessWeek, the two entrepreneurs plan to develop a new software platform for downloading internet television and video content. They have assembled teams of leading software engineers from all over the world, and are currently in the early stages of negotiations with a number of television networks.
“The Venice Project,†as it is currently being called, is expected to be formally announced as early as this fall.
Although tech startups are notorious for failure, Zenstrom and Friis have the power of experience on their side, and should have more clout than most when negotiating with big players in the media and entertainment industry.
