.MOBI Domain Extension Faces Scrutiny from Marketing Analysts
7:30 am on July 7, 2006 | Category: Web Services, Mobile Devices
In recent months, many marketing analysts and professionals have been wondering why a group of companies, including Microsoft, Nokia, and Google are working so hard to push .MOBI, the new domain extension designed specifically for mobile web browsers.
“I don’t think it’s strategic in the long term,” said Jean Berberich, a consumer market research for Procter & Gamble.
Ultimately a mobile specific domain extension will just be one more thing for consumers to get used to, and one more instruction for companies to explain in advertisements.
.MOBI also goes against the trend of integrating mobile and PC browsing to make the majority of digital content available through multiple platforms.
It appears that the .MOBI movement has a lot of work ahead of it if the controversial new extension is ever to achieve widespread approval from analysts and consumers.
