The Mozilla Corporation launched the much-anticipated first beta of Firefox 2.0 yesterday, adding a number of convenient new features to the popular web browser.

Most of the new additions are quite subtle, meaning those looking for extensive updates or an entirely new interface will likely be disappointed. What changes have been made, however, are definite improvements.

A new antiphishing utility, for example, is trained to detect imitation websites and possible scams, and launches a special warning notice whenever such a site is accessed.

Another useful addition is the built-in spellchecker, which checks your spelling as you type, and will likely be welcomed by bloggers and those who make frequent use of web forms.

Firefox 2.0 also doubles as a feed reader, letting users preview RSS and XML feeds in a newspaper-like format.

Perhaps the most useful new feature of all is the “Undo Close Tab” option, which lets you recall the most recently closed page by right-clicking on the tab bar. All tabs are can automatically be recalled if your browser crashes or your computer freezes unexpectedly.

For those that want to help with the testing of Firefox 2.0, the beta version is available for download at http://developer.mozilla.org/. Keep in mind, however, that this is a beta version. It will include some bugs, and won’t be compatible with many of your existing extensions. If you aren’t a developer, it is strongly recommended that you stick with version 1.5 for the time being.
