A biannual report from the FCC has confirmed that, despite their lower overall market share, DSL providers are now adding more new subscribers than their cable broadband counterparts.

Telecom ISPs added a total of 5.7 million subscribers in 2005, compared to just 4.2 million for cable internet operators such as Road Runner and Comcast.

As of December 2005, about 57.5% of America’s 50.2 million broadband customers used a cable modem to access the internet, compared to a 40.5% market share for DSL.

Some analysts now predict that these numbers could swap places over the next couple of years, however, due to an influx of price-conscious dialup converts, who are unwilling to pay for the slightly more expensive cable services. This would make telecom giants like Verizon and AT&T the leading providers of internet access in the U.S.
