As Wi-Fi hotspots pop up in a number of New York’s biggest parks, local authorities are open to the possibility of building an extended wireless network, covering other parts of the city.

Once all 18 park hotspots are up and running, studies will be conducted on whether the city needs its own blanket Wi-Fi network, as well as what challenges such a project would face.

Researchers will analyze the popularity of the public park networks as a microcosm of the city, and use this information to determine whether it is feasible to follow in the footsteps of cities like Philadelphia and San Francisco, which are currently building citywide mesh Wi-Fi deployments.
