British telecom regulator, Ofcom, is making plans to legalize the use of low-power FM transmitters, which can be used to wirelessly stream digital music onto any FM radio.

Devices like the iTrip transmitter, by Griffin Technology, may be used legally in North America, but their use is still technically banned by the UK regulator.

“Low-power FM radio transmitters for MP3 players are currently unauthorised for use in the UK and Europe because of the potential to cause interference to broadcast services,” Ofcom confirmed in a statement. “Ofcom is responding to growing consumer demand for the use of these devices and has led negotiations in Europe to develop a harmonized approach to their use by late autumn 2006.”

Hopefully, these efforts will result in the long-overdue legalization of this highly useful and popular wireless technology.
