Verizon Wireless has just released the Samsung SCH-a990, the first high-resolution multimedia camera phone ever to hit the U.S. market.

The a990 features a 3.2-megapixel digital camera with flash, zoom, auto focus, photo editor, video recording, and a swiveling screen. It also boasts compatibility with Verizon’s V CAST wireless multimedia network, which allows for over-the-air music, game, and video downloads.

Other notable benefits of this 4.4-ounce phone include integrated Bluetooth, as well as support for VZ Navigator, a mapping tool that gives customers access to turn-by-turn navigation and the ability to pinpoint over 14 million distinct locations.

Samsung and Verizon describe the a990 as appearing “first like a phone and then, when the screen is rotated 180 degrees, like a camera.” This makes it “the first mobile device that is as much a camera as it is a multimedia phone,” the companies claim.

The SCH-a990 is now available on the Verizon website (www.verizonwireless.com) at a cost of $349.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate, for those willing to commit to a 2-year contract. It will hit the shelves of over 1,900 Verizon Wireless retail stores beginning on July 24.
