Yahoo and Microsoft Start Instant Messaging Interoperability Beta
7:30 am on July 14, 2006 | Category: Business, Messaging, Web Services
Yahoo and Microsoft have made good on a deal to offer interoperability between their instant messaging platforms, launching a Beta version of the new feature yesterday.
By combining their user bases, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger with Voice will have a total of 350 million user accounts, allowing them to compete more effectively with America Online’s AIM platform, the current market leader.
This will also help Microsoft and Yahoo, both of which offer free PC-to-PC voice messaging, to catch up to Skype in the internet VoIP market, and edge out Google Talk, a relative newcomer to the online communication business.
Yahoo and Microsoft both say that the interoperability feature will be taken out of Beta and rolled out to all users “in the coming months,” although they have declined to give an exact date.

Why now?? There’s a great article explaining why Yahoo! and Microsoft of all companies decided to get together to team up and make their IM clients interoperate.

This was a smart move by MSN and Yahoo. Just by working together, they made themselves very formidable competitors in the online communication business. Reminds me of UPN and WB coming together to form CW. I should keep up to date on these blogs. I was wondering why my MSN could have Yahoo contracts last year.
