Despite the fact that 3G wireless licenses have yet to be issued in China, the country’s telecom regulators are confident that mobile television technology will be up and running in time for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

A spokesman with the Chinese State Administration for Radio, Film and Television is quoted as saying that the country will use DMB (digital multimedia broadcasting) technology for its mobile TV roll-out, and that trials of the system will begin in 2007.

The Asian country’s two leading wireless carriers, China Mobile and China Unicom, are reportedly working on deals to offer DMB-compatible cell phones to their customers at some point within the next couple of years.

If China can indeed succeed in a mainstream roll out of mobile TV by summer 2008, the Olympics should serve as a great launching pad for this hot new entertainment technology.

    1. We have been watching the developments of Mobile TV in China for a while now. It does not appear likely that any technology other than that offered by China Mobile on its own network will make any major impact even if it manages to get launched. We have followed through the long process of the new standards for China Mobile TV ( CMMB) and the new broadcast satelllite STiMi.

With 3G still in Limbo, is Mobile Tv still a priority?
The next two months will tell.
