Wireless DBS LLC, the wireless joint venture created by America’s two largest satellite TV providers, has withdrawn from an FCC auction of wireless spectrum licenses.

The two satellite television giants, DirecTV Group and EchoStar Communications, had initially shown strong in purchasing wireless airwaves, and Wireless DBS was in fact the early leader in this high profile auction. Most analysts believe that the companies would have used the airwaves to offer wireless broadband services.

The withdrawal of Wireless DBS leaves existing wireless giants like Cingular, Verizon, and T-Mobile to compete with a consortium of cable operators hoping to break into the wireless communication business.
