America’s Federal Communications Commission kicked off its latest wireless spectrum auction yesterday, and plans to auction off 90-MHz of airwaves in the days to come.

Expected to generate as much as $20 billion in revenue, the auction will involve 1,122 licenses in the 1710MHz to 1755MHz and 2110MHz to 2155 MHz frequencies.

A total of 168 participants, including existing wireless carriers, as well as cable and satellite providers, have been authorized to bid on the licenses. The results of the auction will be instrumental in deciding how big a role non-traditional providers will play in the cell phone market of the future.
