Mozilla Firefox Continues to Gain on Internet Explorer
7:20 am on August 6, 2006 | Category: Business, Web Services, Software
The popular open-source web browser, Mozilla Firefox, is continuing to gain market share among internet users, slowly but surely stealing users from Internet Explorer.
A new study from web research firm, Net Applications, suggests that Firefox’s market share has increased by 1.8 percentage points this year alone, reaching 11.3% in July. Microsoft’s browser, meanwhile, has seen its market share slip by 1.7 points since January, and is the primary browser of 83.6% of worldwide internet users.
This means that Microsoft’s hold on the browser market is gradually slipping, especially in the U.S., where Firefox reportedly has a 14.1% share.
The software giant will try to gain back this lost ground with its forthcoming browser, Internet Explorer 7. The new version’s success against Firefox 2.0 will largely determine whether or nor Microsoft will continue to dominate the browser business.
