AT&T Inc. is expected to be chosen to build a citywide wireless broadband network in the city of Springfield, Illinois, marking the company’s first major mesh Wi-Fi victory.

Springfield Mayor, Timothy Davlin, said earlier this week that he hopes to pursue a blanket Wi-Fi proposal submitted by AT&T, pending formal approval by City Council.

The telecom giant’s plan would offer free, ad-supported internet access throughout Springfield, as well as a much faster paid service without ads. The higher-tier service would be offered as a low-cost add-on to existing residential and business DSL subscriptions.

Mayor Davlin says that if constructed, the network will eventually cover a total of 30 square miles using a combination of Wi-Fi and WiMAX technology. AT&T will pay to build and maintain the network, meaning that the project won’t require any subsidies from taxpayers.
