Verizon Eliminates Controversial DSL Surcharge

As I predicted earlier this week, Verizon Communications has decided to scrap the controversial “supplier surcharge,†which was being imposed on DSL internet subscribers in lieu of the now defunct Universal Service Fund fees.
The decision to do away with the short-lived surcharge comes less than a week after FCC regulators demanded an explanation for the telecom giant’s billing practices. BellSouth, which received a similar inquiry, announced that it would do away with the surcharge last Friday.
“We have listened to our customers and are eliminating this charge in response to their concerns,” commented Verizon’s chief marketing officer, Bob Ingalls, in a statement yesterday.
FCC chairman, Kevin Martin, has also released a statement, supporting the decision.
“I am pleased that both Verizon and BellSouth have eliminated fees recently imposed on their DSL customers,” Martin said. “Consumers should receive the benefits of the commission’s action last summer to remove regulations imposed on DSL service.”
