Verizon Communications is making progress with its new fiber optic broadband network, company executives said in a recent conference call.
In the second quarter, more than 25% of the telecom giant’s 440,000 new broadband customers signed up for FiOS service, bringing the Verizon’s total number of fiber optic customers to 375,000.
Over the next few years, the telecom giant plans to spend $20 billion on extending its fiber optic infrastructure, ultimately making FiOS internet and television services available to between 60% and 70% of its total customer base.
The expansion of fiber optic services will likely be a strong advantage for DSL ISPs in the months and years to come, as they seek to compete with the triple play bundles offered by cable companies.
