New York City councilors are currently considering a proposal that would open up space for new cable franchise agreements, potentially allowing Verizon Communications Inc. to offer FiOS television service in America’s largest city.

The New York Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications has asked city administrators to pass a new franchise law, allowing it to approve the construction of new video infrastructure in the area, as well as renew existing contracts with cable incumbents, Time Warner and Cablevision.

If the council cooperates with this request it will create the potential for massive competition between cable and IPTV video providers in New York City and its inner suburbs.
