America’s #2 telecom provider, Verizon Communications Inc., has formally launched PlayLinc, a free online gaming service that will allow players to compete over the internet in a number of games, and use numerous advanced features such as text and voice chat.

The PlayLinc service is designed to help promote Verizon’s fiber-optic broadband service, providing an extra incentive for custoemrs to use the higher-speed offering.

“The better your speeds are, the better the experience will be for all users” in a game, said Verizon’s games product manager, Jason Henderson. “We wanted to create PlayLinc as a platform for selling advertising and digital games online.”

Henderson went on to say that gamers are highly sought after broadband internet customers, as they tend to purchase higher-end services, and are able to fix many technical glitches on their own.
