The Wi-Fi Alliance, which is responsible for certifying the interoperability of Wi-Fi hardware, has announced plans to being testing and approving 802.11n-based networking products in March of next year, rather than waiting for the Wireless-N standard to be finalized by the IEEE.

Although the Wi-Fi Alliance won’t guarantee that certified products will conform with the final IEEE standard (set to be ratified in 2008), it’s mediation will guard against preliminary conflicts and in-operability problems. Several hardware manufacturers, including Intel, Broadcom, Atheros, and Dell have all come out in support of the trade group’s decision

Now that the Wi-Fi Alliance has made this important move, however, the necessity of the IEEE’s slow and bureaucratic ratification process is being called into question.
