BellSouth is reportedly planning to upgrade many of its shorter fiber-to-the-curb DSL loops in the next couple of years, delivering data speeds of up to 80 Mbps into the homes of customers.

The upgrade to VDSL2 technology will commence in late 2007 and continue into 2008, ultimately affecting around 1.35 million households, according to a recent news report from Investor’s Business Daily.

These plans will likely be subject to some changes when BellSouth finalizes its merger with AT&T, but most industry watchers believe that the initiative will end up going ahead, regardless. Lehman Brothers analyst Marcus Kupferschmidt, for example, points out that “BellSouth would (not) make these comments and inform state regulators of the upgrade plans if the intentions were not real.”

In a recent speech at the Boston VON trade show, BellSouth executive, Peter Hill, commented that the telecom giant “has always been on a path to add VDSL2,” providing further assurance that the upgrades will eventually take place.
