California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger is currently considering a piece of legislation that would force manufacturers of wireless broadband hardware to warn customers about security concerns.

The proposed bill; written by Los Angeles Democrat, Fabian Nunez, who leads the state Assembly; is designed to guard against the practice of “piggybacking” where freeloaders pick up the Wi-Fi signals of neighbors and nearby businesses.

If passed, the new legislation will force manufacturers to either place warning stickers on each router, give users an on-screen security prompt during the configuration process, or enable security by default.
