In a surprising case of telecom-cable cooperation, AT&T has recently signed a deal to offer a number of Comcast’s cable television channels on its U-verse IPTV service.
The deal will give U-verse subscribers access to E! Entertainment Television, The Golf Channel, Comcast SportsNet Chicago, SportsNet West, SprotsNet New York, Style, G4, PBS Kids Sprout, AZN Television, and OLN (soon to be renamed Versus).
“From E! Entertainment to The Golf Channel, we offer something for everyone and are pleased that AT&T sees the high value that these networks have in reaching TV viewers,” said Comcast’s executive vice president of distribution and development, Bill Bridgen, in a recent release.
Delivered over a combination of copper wires and fiber-optic cables, AT&T’s U-verse IPTV service is expected to see significant expansion over the next few years, likely competing with Comcast and other cable U.S. cable companies in a variety of markets.
