DirecTV Begins Testing Satellite VoIP Service
6:30 am on September 3, 2006 | Category: VoIP, Wireless Technology, Television
Leading U.S. satellite provider, DirecTV, has announced plans to test an in-house VoIP phone service, as part of a joint venture with Hicks Holdings.
A special pilot program will take place over the next six months, using hardware from Vistula Communications.
The companies eventually hope to deliver a nationwide satellite VoIP offering, and will start by targeting apartment buildings and gated communities. DirecTV is likely hoping to use the new service as part of a triple-play television, internet, and telephone bundle, so as to better compete with its cable rivals.
