Motorola Q and Other Smartphones Fail to Faze RIM’s BlackBerry

The much-hyped Motorola Q smartphone, along with competing devices from Nokia and Palm, have failed to put a dent in the market for BlackBerry wireless email devices, according to RIM chairman and co-CEO, Jim Balsillie.

“I haven’t noticed an impact yet,” Balsillie commented when asked about the new Motorola smartphone, which hit the market in July.

The BlackBerry is sure to come under even more competitive pressure in the coming months, especially the impending launch of Palm’s Treo 750v PDA-smartphone, and Nokia’s E62 wireless email device.

But executives at the Ontario-based BlackBerry maker don’t seem very frightened. “Those guys are kind of knocking each other,” Ballsillie said of Nokia, Palm, and Motorola’s ventures into the wireless email market. “We’re a platform that goes beyond that … much more of a service solution.”

That doesn’t mean RIM is afraid to integrate multimedia-oriented features, however, with the recently announced BlackBerry Pearl expected to include a 1.3-megapixel digital camera as well as built-in music and video functions.

By mixing its industry-leading push email system with mobile multimedia functionality, RIM is obviously hoping to beat the predictions of analysts, and remain a dominant name in wireless communication for many years to come.
