Research In Motion has announced plans to begin selling a Japanese-language version of the popular BlackBerry wireless email device by the middle of next year.

The first BlackBerry for the Japanese market, which is set to launch this week, has an English-language keyboard, and is targeted mostly towards foreign business users. To capture a significant share of Japan’s domestic enterprise market, however, RIM has decided to work on a new model that will be fully compatible with the country’s native language.

“We’re working to have a solution for entering Japanese fonts in the first two quarters of next year,” revealed RIM President and Co-CEO, Mike Lazaridis, at a recent press conference in Tokyo.

Lazaridis also assured potential customers that the new device would be fully compatible with all previous BlackBerry models, and hinted that it may be marketed to individual customers, as well as businesses.

    1. It’s quite silly that Blackberry only chose to target foreign business users while they can make english keyboards compactible with japanese. Most Japanese users know well how to type Japanese with English keyboards – they use it to chat online. Then instead of targeting a small population, they can target middle-class and above consumers and maintain a good amount of English programs to target those who want to learn/improve their English.
