The worldwide number of 3G mobile phone users is expected to reach 167 million at the end of this year, then skyrocket to 1 billion by 2010, according to Strategy Analytics.
The research firm goes on to predict that 3G services will account for more than 50% of wireless revenues in four years, despite the fact that they will be used by only a third of the world’s cell phone users.
“3G still has its detractors, but it is starting to make a significant contribution to the wireless marketplace,” commented Strategy Analytics analyst, David Kerr, in a statement.
Researchers have credited Verizon Wireless for the recent surge in U.S. 3G demand, and say that the worldwide market for high-speed data services will really pick up once carriers in India, China, Brazil, Pakistan, and Russia can duplicate this effect.
