Telecom New Zealand has announced plans to launch its first truly global wireless roaming solution, in the form of a CDMA/GSM-based WorldMode mobile phone.

Manufactured by Samsung, the new device will operate domestically using Telecom NZ’s CDMA network, but will automatically switch to GSM mode in markets where CDMA is not available. This will give New Zealanders the ability to seamlessly communicate on over 300 wireless networks around the globe.

The first WorldMode handset is expected to hit the New Zealand market sometime in early 2007, after all necessary tests have been completed. It is expected to be just the first in a line of CDMA/GSM wireless products, designed with the global traveler in mind.
