Verizon Communications announced this week that it hopes to generate a profit with its fiber optic broadband and television services by the year 2009.

The telecom giant has invested heavily in its fiber optic network over the past couple of years, plans to make FiOS services available to 6 million U.S. households by the end of this year.

Capacity will be increased by about 3 million homes a year for the foreseeable future, in hopes of reaching 18 million by late 2010.
