U.S. telecom giant, AT&T Inc., will roll-out the high-definition version of its IPTV service in 15 markets by the end of this year, the company said in a conference call this week.

AT&T has already invested heavily in its new fiber optic broadband network, called Project Lightspeed, and has been using this network to offer its own television service, going into direct competition with cable giants like Time Warner and Comcast.

The company’s chief financial officer, Rick Linder, said that initial reaction to the so called U-verse IP-television service had been “very positive,” and that 3000 subscribers in San Antonio, Texas would soon be upgraded to HDTV-level service. This move will be quickly followed by upgrades in 14 other metropolitan areas, across AT&T’s 13-state service area.
