Developing Technologies Continue to Affect Canadian Telecom Industry

New and developing technologies are continuing to have a major influence on Canada’s telecom industry, according to a report from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.
As technology develops, the cost of providing service declines, and a greater number of non-traditional service providers are able to enter the communications market. This ultimately leads to lower prices and greater choice for consumers.
“The telecommunications sector is evolving rapidly as we move towards increased reliance on market forces,” commented CRTC chairman, Charles Dalfen, in a statement.
Total telecommunications industry revenue increased by 3.5% in 2005, largely due to the growing adoption of broadband internet and wireless services. About 65% of this revenue was generated by incumbent local telephone carriers, while the other 35% (a growing minority) went to competitors, including cable companies.
