Eudora Email Client Going Open Source
6:55 am on October 13, 2006 | Category: Email, Software, Web Services
Qualcomm has announced intentions to base all future versions of its Eudora email client on Mozilla’s open-source Thunderbird application.
The new and improved Eudora is set to be released in the first half of 2007, until which time Qualcomm will continue selling current versions of the application.
Founded in 1988, Eudora was the most popular email client in the early years of the internet, and was acquired by Qualcomm in 1991. OS-embedded alternatives like Outlook and Apple Mail, however, soon managed to outdo the email pioneer, as did web-based services like Hotmail and Gmail.
By combining Eudora with an open-source component, Qualcomm is hoping to make numerous infrastructure improvements to the program, while making it more attractive to developers, creating the potential for a revival in Eudora’s popularity.
