Narus Inc. Secures $30 Million in Investment Financing

The infamous Narus Inc., which manufactures internet and telephone wiretapping technology for governments and corporations, announced yesterday that it has raised $30 million in funding to develop future products and expand its operations overseas.
The Mountain View, California-based company is best known for designing equipment used in the U.S. government’s widely criticized wiretapping program. Narus made it possible for telephone companies to sift through the email communications of American citizens, pick out “suspicious†keywords, and turn findings over to the Bush administration.
Narus’s other products and services include “total network view†and “deep-packet inspection,†which are intended to improve the security of corporate networks, and detect “unwanted†internet traffic such as VoIP calls. This technology is currently used by Shanghai Telecom Co., a Chinese ISP, to block internet telephony services like Skype.
Widely hated and distrusted though it is, Narus Inc. has managed to raise financing of $20 million in cash and $10 million in credit from a group of investors including American Capital Strategies, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Mayfield Fund, Pacven Walden Ventures, and NeoCarta Ventures.
