Finnish cell phone giant, Nokia, has unveiled a new short-range wireless technology that is being described as a more energy-efficient alternative to Bluetooth.

“Wibree,” as the new radio technology is called, is fully interoperable with Bluetooth, but uses a fraction of the power, making it a great alternative for small cell phone peripherals, including wireless headphones and watches.

“It’s up to 10 times more energy efficient than Bluetooth,” said Nokia researcher, Bob Iannucci, at a recent news conference. “Our aim is to establish an industry standard faster than ever before by offering an inter-operable solution that can be commercialized and incorporated into products as quickly as possible.”

In terms of distance, Wibree is just a strong as Bluetooth, providing a radio link of up to 10 meters between two compatible wireless devices.
