Palm Inc. has announced a new series of Treo smartphones for its more “price-sensitive” customers, the company announced in New York this week.

Targeted primarily at media-hungry consumers, as opposed to enterprise users, the Palm OS 5.4-based Treo 680 is being described by the company as “lower cost and easier to use than any other Palm.” It will come equipped with MP3, video, and photographic slide show features, as well as a built-in digital camera, camcorder, and enhanced SMS and instant messaging features.

The Treo 680’s quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE wireless technology allows it to function on either North American or European networks, while the integration of Bluetooth 1.2 enables it to network with other digital devices.

In a related announcement, Palm announced a new version of Google Maps that is specially optimized for use on Palm OS-based devices. It will allow users of the Treo 680, 700p, 650, and 600 smartphones to quickly and easily get directions, perform local searches, receive traffic updates, and view satellite photographs when on the go.
