Sprint Nextel has incorporated EV-DO Revision A technology into its Sprint Power Vision wireless network in San Diego, making the southern California city the first market in the U.S. where the 3G wireless standard is commercially available.
Sprint plans to roll out the service in 20 more markets over the next couple of months, and aims for a potential reach of 40 million people by the end of this year. The carrier’s entire Power Vision network is set to be upgraded by the third quarter of 2007.
San Diego EV-DO customers should now be noticing a slight increase in download speeds, and significantly faster upload speeds of 300 to 400 kbps, compared to just 50 to 70 kbps with the older technology.
“Sprint’s mobile broadband leadership is unmatched. Not only do we have the largest mobile broadband network, but with the upgraded EV-DO Revision A technology Sprint Power Vision will also be the fastest wireless broadband network in the country,” said Sprint’s chief network officer, Kathy Walker. “The power of Sprint’s networks, especially with this EV-DO Revision A upgrade, allows Sprint to deliver a mobile broadband experience to our customers that no other carrier can provide.”
