UK-based mobile VoIP operator, Truphone, has launched a new version of its software that allows Nokia N80 users to make free or very low-cost wireless telephone calls when within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Truphone service, which begun Beta testing last month, was previously only available on Nokia’s enterprise-oriented E-Series cell phones.

“Support for Nokia’s N80 brings true mobile VoIP to the mass market and gives Truphone genuine consumer appeal,” said start-up’s CEO, James Tagg. “Truphone routes calls entirely via the internet ensuring the lowest possible call costs to consumers whether in their home country or travelling abroad, unlike ‘calling card’ services masquerading as mobile VoIP.”

Users of compatible devices can set up a Truphone account by texting the word “TRU” to 60030 in the UK, or calling +44 7624 000 000 from the US.
