Nielsen Media Research has called into question the popularity of the Apple iPod’s video features, after collecting its first round of data on the popular portable media player’s users.

This groundbreaking research suggests that video files account for less than 1% of all multimedia content played by iPod users. Even among video iPod users, the figure only rises to a measly 2.2%.

Even when factoring in duration of consumption, which is obviously longer for 30 to 60 minute TV shows than three-minute songs, video iPod users spend just 11% of their time watching videos.

According to Nielsen’s “Home Tech Report,” about 13% of U.S. households currently have at least one iPod, and 30% of the devices are equipped for video. Only 15.8% of users, however, have ever played a video on either iTunes or on an iPod device.
