Firefox Still Gaining on Internet Explorer, Despite IE 7.0 Launch

Despite the latest version of Microsoft’s web browser launching three weeks ago, Internet Explorer seems to be continuing its slow but steady decline in market share, according to new research by a web metrics firm.
“IE continued its market share decline at roughly the same rate it’s been experiencing the last few months,” commented Net Applications, after revealing that IE’s overall market share dropped yet again in October, to 81.3% of internet users, compared to 82.1% a month before.
“Microsoft was expected to at least stop losing market share with the new release,” the research firm said commented in an email. “IE may yet stop the bleeding [but] for the short period in October after both releases, the trends remained the same.”
Nevertheless, there is something to be said for the fact that Internet Explorer’s decline hasn’t sped up since its main competitor, the Mozilla Corporation, launched Firefox 2.0 late last month.
“Firefox grew at almost exactly the same rate as the previous month, going from 12.5% in September to 13% in October,” Net Applications reported.
