Golden Telecom Applies for Russian WiMAX Frequencies

U.S.-based communications operator, Golden Telecom, which runs a number of operations in Russia and the former Soviet republics, as applied for WiMAX frequencies in a number of Russian cities, the company’s Corporate Relations Department revealed on Monday.

Golden Telecom’s application to the State Radio Frequency Commission involves frequencies in the 2.5-GHz to 2.7-GHz range, which could allow for data transfer rates of up to 75 Mbps, over distance of up to 30 km.

“We plan to cover all major cities with populations over 400,000 people and the Moscow Region,” said company representative, Anna Chin Go Pin, noting that Golden Telecom had already began testing WiMAX technology in Moscow, where it is also working on a citywide mesh Wi-Fi network.
