A group of well-known consumer electronics manufacturers is entering the market for wireless High-Definition video content with a new specification called “WirelessHD.”

LG Electronics, Panasonic, Samsung Electronics, NEC Corporations, Sony, and Toshiba have all signed a pact to promote the new format, which will likely end up in competition with the much-hyped Ultrawideband (UWB) wireless transmission technology.

The underlying technology for WirelessHD is being produced by SiBEAM, a startup which manufactures 60-GHz “millimeter-wave” technology according to the 802.15.3 Task Group 3c specification.

WirelessHD is expected to enable uncompressed wireless transmission of high-quality HD video and data transmission. It will be the first such technology to be fully integrated with HDTVs, and audio video (A/V) devices, the consortium of companies said.
