Microsoft Corp. announced earlier this week that it is partnering with MetroFi Inc. to offer a free, ad-supported Wi-Fi network in the city of Portland, Oregon.

The Redmond, Washington-based software giant will sell advertising to fund the network, and provide a feature-rich web page to greet users when they log in. This is expected to boost the profile of Microsoft’s local search and mapping services.

MetroFi, meanwhile, is responsible for putting the network itself together, and will sell ad-free premium subscriptions for $20/month.

The Portland network is expected to launch sometime next month, and will be expanded to cover the entire city over the next year and a half. If this deployment is successful, Microsoft is expected to partner with MetroFi on a number of its other municipal Wi-Fi projects in California and Illinois.
