Microsoft has some lofty ambitions for the Windows Mobile operating system, saying that it hopes to double the software’s market penetration this year (from 6 million devices at the end of 2005), and sustain this rate of growth for the next several years.

“The number of devices operating on Windows Mobile doubled to 6 million last year,” said the head of Microsoft’s Mobile and Embedded Devices division, Peter Knook, in a recent interview. “We want to make 100 percent again this year and to grow further at this rate in coming years.”

Microsoft is currently targeting the market for smartphones, the increasingly popular devices that combine the functions of a mobile phone with email, wireless web access, games, and mobile TV.

Knook also mentioned that the software giant is looking at ways of connecting Windows Mobile smartphones to the Xbox Live online gaming console, as a further way to drive growth in market share.
