As the U.S. wireless voice market becomes increasingly saturated and subscriber growth numbers cool off, carriers will likely step up promotion of non-voice services like messaging and entertainment, predicts eMarketer in a recent report.

The market researcher expects the popularity of these non-voice offerings to surge over the next four years, accounting for $37.5 billion, or 20% of carriers’ total revenues in the year 2010.

Messaging services, such as SMS, MMS, instant messaging, and wireless email are expected generate $15 billion annually by the end of this decade, growing from just $3.3 billion in 2006.

Information services, such as directory, news, sports, and financial data, meanwhile, will generate a further $7.5 billion in 2010, eMarketer predicts, compared to $1 billion this year.

The biggest growth of all, however, will belong to wireless entertainment offerings such as games, ringtones, digital music, and multimedia downloads. These are expected to grow from just $1.1 billion in 2006 to a full $15 billion in 2010, helped along by increased penetration of 3G networks.
